Action:
Cod liver oil is rich source of vitamins A and D as well as polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Vitamin A is a structural component of eye pigment rhodopsin and contributes to maintenance of normal eye sight. Vitamin A contributes to normal functioning of the immunological system and normal iron metabolism. Vitamin A also contributes to maintenance of normal skin and mucosal membranes condition, which are a mechanical barrier in the organism’s defense.
Vitamin D contributes to normal usage of calcium and phosphorus in the organism. Through this function, Vitamin D contributes to maintenance of normal muscle function, proper mineralization of bones and teeth and maintenance of normal concentrations of calcium in the blood. Vitamin D is necessary for normal growth and development of bones in children. Most common deformities in vitamin D deficiency are rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. There is loss of bone minerals resulting in skeletal deformities in both cases.
Use:
Cod liver oil is recommended as a dietary supplement for children in the growth phase and for adults in case of vitamins A and D deficiency in the diet, especially in spring and winter.
